A message from the Webmaster
Thanks for visiting my mini-site about the Commonwealth of Nations. When I first heard the the word Commonwealth mentioned I had no idea what it was. I thought it was like the European Union, but it is very different.
For the avoidance of doubt this website is not endorsed or approved by the Commonwealth Secretariat. I've included that message and other small print on the end of every page.
Introduction
The Commonwealth of Nations, (The Commonwealth), is a voluntary association of 53 states all of which are former colonies of the United Kingdom, except for Mozambique and the United Kingdom itself. The primary activities of the Commonwealth are designed to create an atmosphere of economic co-operation between member nations, as well as the promotion of democracy, human rights, and good governance in those nations. The Commonwealth is not a political union, and does not allow the UK to exercise any power over the affairs of the organisation's other members.
Every four years the Commonwealth's members celebrate the Commonwealth Games, the world's second-largest multi-sport event after the Olympic Games.
